Keep your 2026 resolutions with a trip to the High Line

January 14, 2026

Studies tell us that more than half of us abandon our New Year’s resolutions before January is at its midpoint. We’re often thinking too big and not contemplating the simpler, more incremental changes we can make in our lives. If you’re looking for a little inspiration or motivation to keep up your resolutions, consider the High Line to check the boxes on a number of common New Year’s resolutions, for a happier and healthier year ahead.

Get those steps in.

So many of us are hoping to get off the couch more often and get more active in 2026. With a 1.5-mile-long path—and plenty of stairs (!)—you can easily get your steps in and your heart rate up. Walk or run from the High Line’s southernmost entrance at Gansevoort Street to the Crossroads at 30th Street for exactly one mile. Bonus points if you choose to jog or to join us in the warmer months of the year for our free Afro-Brazilian dance, Fit and Lit, Tai Chi, or Zumba classes on the park. Sign up for our emails to be the first to know when the schedule goes live.

Don’t just stroll, take an “awe walk.”

We all know the health benefits of walking—lower blood pressure, improved mental health, lower risk of cardiovascular disease, and so on—but did you know that medical research shows that incorporating awe into your walk can have its own powerful effects on your wellbeing? Experiencing moments of wonder results in the release of dopamine that helps calm your nervous system, reduces inflammation, and can even make you feel more upbeat and hopeful.

Turn off your phone and enjoy a stunning sunset across the Hudson River from on the High Line at 14th Street, “forest bathe” amongst the secluded trees on the High Line at Gansevoort Street, or ponder the monumental art on display throughout our gardens. Taking pauses throughout a walk helps cultivate that sense of transcendent awe and connection with the nature and the world around you.

Get more art and culture into your life, without any impact on your bank account.

The artwork at the High Line not only inspires awe and promotes well-being, it helps keep your personal budget healthy.

You don’t need to pay admission fees to experience world-class art—High Line Art commissions and produces a rotating presentation of artworks on and around the park, with new works debuting nearly every month. Recent additions include Derek Forjour’s Backbreaker Double mural at 22nd Street and Kameelah Janan Rasheed’s eponymous exhibition of films on High Line Channel at 14th Street. For those looking to meet fellow art aficionados or further explore High Line Art’s work, we’ll also host a talk with Rasheed, in conversation with Associate Curator of High Line Art Taylor Zakarin, on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, at 6:30pm.

Prioritize quality time with loved ones via a date night in the sky or outing with friends.

Topping the list of resolutions for so many people are social and relationship goals for the year. The High Line is a great place to get to know someone new, reconnect with your significant other, or find time to socialize with friends and family. Benches and seating welcome conversation and lingering, while the ever-changing landscape (and unparalleled people-watching opportunities!) gives you something new to share and experience during each visit.

Give back (and meet new people!)

Volunteering is a great way to learn new skills, connect with new people, and give back to New York City while harnessing your own talents and strengths. The High Line’s volunteer program is a welcoming, open community of people who share a passion for public space, civic engagement, horticulture, history, and environmental sustainability. Not only will you meet wonderful, passionate people like yourself, but you can also feel good about supporting Friends of the High Line and New York City through sharing your time. Our annual application period opens January 26.
