Gunter’s Chain (pictured above)
This sculpture enlarges the Gunter’s chain, a 17th-century surveying tool used to measure land. Recalibrated using the proportions of the Statue of Liberty, the chain is presented as a continuous form, in contrast to the statue’s broken chains. Ultimately, Gunter’s Chain renders visible the invisible frameworks that make space politically operative, questioning who is permitted access to land once it has been measured and owned.

Refuge Bag
Refuge Bag is a large-scale sculpture of a woven plastic bag. Its distinctive pattern is deeply tied to the global refugee experience, evoking the reality of being forced to carry one’s entire life while fleeing home. Its UV-faded, checkered surface shows signs of wear. By placing this provisional container on the High Line—a former freight rail line—Tieu creates a dialogue with the site’s history of transport, logistics, and contemporary urban gentrification.
